Helen Thomas Retires - Effective Immediately | Hearst | Mediaite

HELEN THOMAS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

WASHINGTON, June 7, 2010 – Helen Thomas announced Monday that she is retiring, effective immediately.

Her decision came after her controversial comments about Israel and the Palestinians were captured on videotape and widely disseminated on the Internet.

Thomas later issued a statement: “I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.’’

Thomas will mark her 90th birthday on Aug. 4.

@Zappos on Why I Sold Zappos

By early 2009, we were at a stalemate. Because of a complicated legal structure, I effectively controlled the majority of the common shares, so that the board couldn't force a sale of the company. But on the five-person board, only two of us -- Alfred Lin, our CFO and COO, and myself -- were completely committed to Zappos's culture. This made it likely that if the economy didn't improve, the board would fire me and hire a new CEO who was concerned only with maximizing profits. The threat was never made overtly, but I could tell that was the direction things were going.

Thank You, SonicMule, For Having Fun With A Press Release - Venture Capital Dispatch - WSJ

Sunil [Pareenja] can’t sing for his life, and while Scott [Bonds] will at least tinker on the piano now and then, it’s safe to say that Julliard is not in his future. Jim [Routh]? There is no hope frankly, and I worry if that’s true even using Smule products. Yet our goal at Smule is to bring creative expression to the masses, and so some diversity on our management team is desirable.
